The Kiln Studios comprised a group of six homes originally built between 1979 and 1980 to a design by New Zealand-born architect Peter Beaven. The development began as a co-operative venture, where six individuals purchased the plots and undertook much of the finishing work themselves. Julian McIntosh Architects was commissioned to transform one of these residences, reconfiguring the layout to expand the property from a one-bedroom home into a functional two-bedroom dwelling.
Our approach focused on respecting the original architectural integrity of Beaven’s design while adapting the internal volume to suit modern living requirements. Through careful spatial planning, we successfully integrated an additional bedroom and enhanced the flow of the home, ensuring the transformation felt both seamless and true to the spirit of the original self-build project.
