The William Paton Gardeners, a charitable gardening collective based in Custom House, East London, collaborated with Newham Council to commission JMA to create a contemporary sculpture located within their community gardens.
The design of the structure was undertaken in consultation with the local community and was aimed at providing a sustainable, sculptural element to the garden. The proposal sought to harvest rainwater and provide a biodiverse structure for birds and insects to inhabit. As part of the project, we explored ideas together with both the community gardeners and individuals from the council to ensure that the sculpture would be beneficial to the environment and the community.
The project was completed within a matter of weeks and made use of local, natural materials and sustainable building techniques. The sculpture now serves as a pivotal part of the garden, providing a focal point for the community to gather and appreciate the beauty of nature in the heart of the city.
The result of this collaboration demonstrates the power of community-driven initiatives in creating positive change in the urban landscape. The sculpture stands as a testament to the creativity, innovation, and dedication of those involved in the project, and serves as an inspiration for future collaborative efforts in the area.
