JMA was commissioned by a couple living in the garden suburb of Hadley Wood in North London to redesign their Arts and Crafts-style home. The aim of the project was to increase the liveable square metres and create a modern and contemporary home to match similar high-quality residential developments in the area. We worked closely with the clients, who felt that their existing layout of house did not work for them and that the house required significant updating.

Our design ideas focused on connecting the home to the garden through expansive views from the entrance lobby through the house and out to the mature, landscaped garden. Through re-ordering the layout, providing open-plan contemporary spaces and incorporating internal and external glazing, the design helped to create a luxurious family home.

Further to the aesthetic design improvements to the home, we aimed to improve the home's layout, creating upgraded living accommodation to support a range of family activities undertaken in the house to provide both working, living and social spaces.

We improved the kitchen design with the addition of the utility and pantry layouts, which  benefitted from a triple height entrance space. On the upper levels, we enlarged the bedrooms and master suites to include walk-in wardrobes and ensuite bathrooms, increasing the value of the house.

Throughout the design process, JMA managed a range of consultants who were required to undertake a variety of surveys to understand the challenges of renovating and redeveloping the existing building and site location.

When redesigning this unique home, we applied our ethos of light layout and flow to create a design that best utilised the space and created light-filled living areas. The resulting family home was significantly enlarged, increasing the value of the property and matching the desirability of the surrounding area
