Located within the Clapham Common Conservation Area, this project involved the transformation of a probate property into a sophisticated, contemporary family home. Our objective was to breathe new life into a constrained Victorian flat, modernising the interior while meticulously preserving the building's historical integrity.

To achieve this, we reconfigured the layout to optimise space, creating a more generous, airy, and cohesive environment. A key intervention was the introduction of a unique central courtyard; this provided a dual benefit, as it significantly enhanced natural daylight and improved ventilation, ensuring a sustainable and comfortable living space. Further structural alterations included the installation of three double-glazed sliding doors across the rear elevation and the replacement of the existing roof with an elegant, low-profile lantern, which flooded the home with light.

Externally, we updated the rear glazing with thermally efficient, slim-profile aluminium frames while carefully restoring the original timber sash windows on the front elevation to uphold the character of the streetscape. The proposal also extended to the garden, where we redesigned the outdoor space and introduced a new garden room, creating a seamless transition between the interior and the enhanced landscaping.

Internally, we merged the kitchen, dining, and living areas into one fluid, open-plan space. We also converted the basement into a dedicated utility area, further optimizing the home’s footprint. The bedrooms and bathrooms were modernized with a specific focus on creating a practical and nurturing environment for the family’s children.

Through a series of thoughtful structural and spatial interventions, we successfully redefined this property as a bright, functional, and contemporary residence, fully restored for modern family life on the Common.
