In late 2020, our team was approached by a client to provide consultation and advice on a selection of designs for a pool house within a conservation area. The client had received various design proposals from other firms but after reviewing the options, they asked us to create a new design that would update the existing plans and provide an innovative and upgraded space.

To ensure that the space offered more than a traditional garden room, we conducted thorough research on various pool designs and embarked on a design process that focused on creativity, uniqueness and innovation. We were particularly influenced by the harmonious design and structure of the classic Mies Van der Rohe Barcelona Pavilion. Using this as a source of inspiration, we created a set of programmatic elements that aimed to support a rear garden pool area and upgrade elements of the existing structure. Our aim was to create a dynamic area at the rear of the garden, creating a seamless and creative space for socialising, cooking, entertaining guests and retreating as a family. Our client found other designers ‘lacked creativity and uniqueness,’ wanting to follow a ‘formulaic’ design. In contrast, the client found that we ‘took the necessary time to understand the ‘desired usage’ and ‘existing[…] layout,’ combining a personalised approach with creative flair.

To bring our proposal to life, we utilised a range of tools, including 3D modelling and physical modelling. We were also meticulous in selecting the materials used, taking care to choose specifications that would meet both the functional and aesthetic goals of the project.

Overall, we successfully created a pool house that exceeded our client's expectations and provided a functional yet sleek space within the conservation area.
