Nestled in the vibrant heart of Brixton on Windrush Square lies the Black Cultural Archives (BCA), a beacon of British Black History. Established in 1981, the BCA stands as a national institution, dedicated to the collection, preservation, and celebration of the rich histories of individuals of African and Caribbean descent.

We worked with Urban Symbotiocs as the consultants on this project, bringing our proficiency in interior architecture and listed buildings. Our collaboration culminated in the creation of a bespoke bookshop that resonated with the essence of the BCA, with black interiors that reflected the BCA’s branding.

Through meticulous design, we optimised the layout to enhance book storage, elevate the display of unique archive materials, and carve out intimate pockets of reading and shopping space for both visitors and staff.

Prior to our intervention, the bookshop struggled to fulfil its potential, failing to function effectively. However, our thoughtful redesign not only addressed these shortcomings but also spurred a notable increase in visitor numbers and retention rates. Delving into the intersection between archival preservation and retail functionality, we crafted a design that is not only practical but also deeply sensitive to the mission and ethos of the BCA.

In essence, our collaboration with Urban Symbiotics has yielded a transformative space that serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of the BCA, offering visitors an immersive journey through the narratives of British Black History while fostering a sense of community and belonging.
